Garuda Wisnu Kencana (GWK) – Location, History, Facts & Attractions

About GWK

The Garuda Wisnu Kencana Statue or GWK Bali is a magnet that attracts tourists to visit the Island of the Gods. The 20-meter tall statue in Uluwatu, South Kuta, was inaugurated in September 2021.

History of GWK

History of GWK

GWK Bali is Indonesia’s Liberty. The architect of GWK is I Nyoman Nuarta, the founder of the GWK Foundation. The construction was begun in 1992 by the Garuda Wisnu Kencana Foundation but had encountered several obstacles, so its completion was delayed.

In 2013, the Garuda Wisnu Kencana Bali Foundation management was taken over by PT Alam Sutera Realty Indonesia. PT Alam Sutera Realty Indonesia is one of the property development companies in Indonesia, which then began to seriously realize the project’s discourse.

GWK Bali is projected to become a Bali landmark and a cultural tourist spot well-known to foreign countries, such as the Statue of Liberty in the United States or the Colosseum in Rome, Italy.

The selection of sculpture carvings is not without reason. In Hindu mythology, Balinese people believe that Garuda is a bird with positive values such as toughness.

Garuda is also the vahana (vehicle) of Lord Vishnu, one of the preservers and protectors of the universe. In Hinduism, he has a role in sustaining and protecting all of God’s creations.

Because of the statue of Lord Vishnu, who wears a golden crown and is riding a vast Garuda bird, this place is named Garuda Wisnu Kencana (GWK). Kencana itself is the Balinese language which means ‘Gold.’
